RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

51-year-old Richard Moody of Florence has pled guilty to attempted murder and has been sentenced to 40 years in prison with 12 years suspended.

According to Madison/Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest, in the early morning hours of July 4, 2013, the Rankin County Sheriff's Department responded to 144 Oak Street after a 911 call reported a shooting at the home.

When the officer arrived they found the victim lying on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to his face.

Deputies spoke to the victim's girlfriend who witnessed the shooting.

She told the officer that she was asleep when she heard someone banging at the door of the home.

When she went downstairs, she saw that Moody was at the door and let him in. When he came inside, Moody fired two shots at the victim, who was lying on the couch.

The second shot struck the victim in the face.

Moody's girlfriend says she then fled to a neighbor's house and called police.

Officers went to Moody's house later and arrested him. They recovered the weapon and performed a gun-shot residue test on Moody.

Moody admitted to police that he shot the victim who was his neighbor.

He told officers that he and the victim had a fight earlier in the day at the grocery store, and that the victim had threatened to shoot Moody's dogs.

After the fight, Moody told police that he went home and started drinking alcohol. Moody stated that the more he drank the angrier he became, and that he decided to confront the victim.

He says that he armed himself with a .22 caliber pistol and went to the victim's home where he fired two shots, one of which struck the victim.
