JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - It's not a matter of toys, it's a matter of manpower. Toys for Tots simply doesn't have enough ambassadors to continue to serve 13 Mississippi Counties this Christmas.

Coordinator Billy Henderson says this year, the program will only serve Rankin, Madison, and Hinds Counties. Other organizations in Copiah, Issaquena, Warren, Jefferson Davis, and six other counties will have to step up to the plate.

"Primarily this is where most of the toys come from, and this is where most of the needy children are," says Toys for Tots Coordinator Billy Henderson. We certainly hope that some of the other organizations are helping out. The churches I think primarily are probably what handles those kids now."

Meanwhile, the sorting has just begun at the Toys for Tots Headquarters in Flowood. Most people buy toys for the 3 to 5 age range. The bins for the 0 to 2, 7 to 9 and 9 to 12 age groups fill up pretty slowly.

Volunteer Dawn Henderson says she's heard that those age groups pose a challenge for those looking to buy gifts.

"I know for one thing, the girls love those rubber band looms that do the bracelets and stuff, things like that, crafts," she says.

Families who demonstrate a financial need can register for Toys for Tots through Saturday at
Fresh Start Christian Church, 5240 Manhattan Drive, Jackson, or Children's Educare Daycare, 1717 Raymond Road, Jackson. Click here for more information.

The toys will be sorted for distribution December 15 through 19.
