JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

That's among the reasons why Mississippi has become the first state in the nation to launch a personal sexual health APP for cell phones.

"It really focuses on risk factors," said State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs. "People can go in and dial in what their sexual behaviors are and identify what their risks are for disease."

Dobbs says public health officials not only want Mississippians to take care of their health, they also urge paying close attention to a very personal issue, sexuality.

"We're number one in Chlamydia. We're number one in gonorrhea. We're number 10 in HIV infections. So, we have to do something about it," said Dobbs. "Teenagers are one of our highest risk categories for Chlamydia.  And young adults in their 20's are one of the highest risk for gonorrhea.  It's really important for Mississippians to have access to information and resources."

Mississippi teenagers are also among the most sexually active in the country.

"Although abstinence would be the preferred thing for our teenagers, we do know that over half, approximately 58%, are sexually active before graduating high school," added Dobbs.

That's among the reasons why Mississippi has become the first state in the nation to launch a personal sexual health APP for cell phones.

"So that we can distribute messages about sexual health, who's at risk for getting infections, where to get help or to get tested, how to order condoms," said Dr. Dobbs. "There's online mailing that can be done. We've got to do something about it."

And all of those resources are free, including treatment, if needed.

"Ignorance is the enemy here. Being able to protect yourself. But also being able to get rapid and effective treatment will do a lot of good for stopping additional transmission," Dobbs said. "Every county in the state has a county health department with free STD testing and treatment."
