HOUSTON (WLBT) - Alcorn State made history on Saturday. The Braves beat Southern 38-24 for their first SWAC Championship since 1994. The victory also gave ASU (10-3) their first ten-win season since 1947.
John Gibbs Jr. had a homecoming to remember for Alcorn. The Houston native threw for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus 133 rushing yards. Four different Braves found the endzone against the Jaguars.
Southern stayed in the game with special teams. The Jaguars blocked two punts, including one for a touchdown that tied the game in the 3rd quarter. Willie Quinn also had a 86 yard punt return in the 2nd for SU (9-4).
But Anthony Williams III gave the Braves the lead for good with a 4 yard TD. The Louisiana native had 2 scores for Alcorn.
