COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A Copiah County man was found dead Saturday in the woods from a gunshot wound.

Sheriff Harold Jones said 23-year-old Joshua Ellis Tarver was found in a wooded area behind the three thousand block of Gallatin Road near Crystal Springs.

The sheriff said a verbal altercation with the property owner led to the fatal shooting.

William "Bill" Parks has been taken into custody.

Authorities said Tarver, who is from Wesson, was renting a place on Parks' property.

Tarver's relatives told WLBT he was shot in the back.

They said Parks initially ordered him to stay off the property, then called him Saturday telling him to come get the rest of his things.

The investigation is ongoing.

Copiah County Deputy Coroner Judy Evans would not describe Tarver's injuries, but said a gun was involved, and the wound was not self inflicted.

Evans said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
