Mississippi Civil War Sites Included in Defense Bill

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The U.S. Senate has approved the National Defense Authorization Act which includes Civil War Battlefield sites in Claiborne and Hinds counties. The measure was sponsored by Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker.

It includes the Champion Hill, Port Gibson and Raymond Battlefield Addition Act to expand the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Senator Thad Cochran issued a statement Friday saying,

"the preservation of hallowed ground in the United States honors those who sacrificed their lives and creates opportunities for all of us to learn more about the historic battles that helped shape our nation," Said Senator Cochran in a statement. "I am pleased that the Congress is acting to help us preserve additional sites in Mississippi associated with the Civil War.”

"Our nation's historic battlefields serve as important reminders of the sacrifices made by our forefathers," added Senator Wicker. "I am proud to stand with Senator Cochran to help safeguard these important Civil War sites in Mississippi.”

The bill is now cleared to be signed into law.
