JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Family and friends paid their final respects Monday to Mary Ann Mobley, Mississippi's First Miss America. Funeral services were held at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson. Mobley died at her home in California last Tuesday.

She grew up in Brandon and attended Ole Miss. She was crowned Miss America in 1959.

Friends who knew her before the titles and fame say those things didn't change her. And those who only met her once say her spirit was genuine.

"And just to say we are praying for the family. She was just a sweet person," said Renee Neblett. "Every time I talked to her she was asking about everybody and just so generous and so nice and so polite, very personable"

Mobley was also the first woman to be voted into the University of Mississippi Hall of Fame.
