Donors avoid swiping cards when giving to Salvation Army

FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The countdown is on for those agencies depending on donations this holiday season. While Salvation Army officials say many Christmas needs for children and adults are being met, there is still quite a need.

Even as the Salvation Army goes high-tech with their giving options, many donors are hesitant.

Seven year old Mary Morgan and five year old Ann Harper Mardis are learning a lesson about giving from their grandmother, Connie Abraham of Houston Texas.

The girls stuffed bills into the Salvation Army Red Kettle outside Belk at Dogwood Festival Mall Monday.

"It is important for them to learn that it's not always good to receive. it is important to give back to those who are not as fortunate as they are," said Abraham.

The dollars they gave are needed because the charity organization is behind in collections. Despite a new electronic donation campaign, the charity finds that debit and credit card donations only bring in an average of $20.00 per day.

November 21 the Salvation army introduced 20 C-Spire donation kiosks.

"I think two things are against us, said Salvation Army Capt. Ken Chapman. "People are used to putting cash in the kettle, but the other thing that is against us is that Sony and Home Depot and Target and all that. They were hit hard right as we started. I don't think that did us any favors." 

The kiosks are at Kroger and Walmart in the Jackson metro.

"I actually did not know that they did that until you just said that, said Sherry Jones of Leesburg, who was shopping with her family. "So maybe more people need to realize that because we usually give money." 

"You want to give back what the Lord has given you," said Tommy Wilson of Meadville.

When asked if he had tried to donate by swiping a credit or debit card Wilson said, "Not really. You know in this day and time you've got to be careful where you swipe your card at."

"I want to assure you I'm willing to use my own card, and it is safe and secure," said Capt. Chapman.

The organization relies on the red kettle campaign for their annual budget.

On January 3rd of this year its Thrift Store was destroyed by a fire. The agency lost $459,000.00 dollars in revenue, but no employees were out of work.

There is some good news. The Angel Tree Drive is completed with generous people in the community providing Christmas gifts for 4,463 children and senior citizens.

You only have two more days to make a donation to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.

So far, they have collected more than $418,000.00.
