Confirmed tornado on the ground in Columbia

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Storms containing heavy downpours, hail, strong winds, and frequent lightning are continuing to move across the area.

There are a few watches still in affect for areas in the state.

More rain and thunder could be widespread across the state this afternoon.

The greatest threat for severe storms and tornadoes is in the southeastern portion of the state, including areas like Meridian, Hattiesburg and McComb. 

Still, a strong to severe storm could happen anywhere on the map today.

Rain and thunder continue through the overnight, exiting early Christmas Eve morning. 

Cooler air then pours in and stabilizes our atmosphere, making for much quieter conditions for the holiday. 

Christmas Eve will be in the low 50s with clearing skies. Christmas Day will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 50s.
