RICHLAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Athletics Department at Belhaven University has announced the man killed in a Christmas Eve accident was one of their student athletes.

On Thursday, Richland police told us a bicyclist was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Old Highway 49.

It happened around 6:15, Wednesday night, in front of the KLLM Trucking Company.

Investigators said the intoxicated driver struck a pedestrian riding a bicycle, then wrecked the vehicle.

The victim died after medics arrived at the scene.

Belhaven has identified the victim as Trey Rich, a senior from Memphis, and a member of their football team.

He had just gotten off work at his job at FedEx when the wreck happened.

Last season Rich appeared in seven games at wide receiver and as a kick returner with the Blazers. He was a Sports Administration major.

The team's coach and other athletic officials spoke with the University's website

Belhaven Football Head Coach Hal Mumme said "Trey Rich was not only a great teammate, but he was even more so a great young man who was lost too soon. He worked tirelessly both on the field and in the classroom and set a standard of excellence among his fellow wide receivers and his teammates. Though above all this, Trey's infectious smile will be missed."

Belhaven Vice President for Athletics Scott Little adds "Trey was a well-respected young man among teammates and across campus, and we ask for prayers for his family and friends during this difficult time."

The driver has been identified as 29-year-old Reginald Davis. He remains in a local hospital.
