JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The town of Edwards officially has a new mayor. Businessman Marcus Wallace was sworn in Tuesday afternoon, and he admits to the citizens that he has his work cut out for him.
"This town needs everything," Wallace said in a stirring speech.
From revamping the water and sewer system, to upgrading the police department, Wallace said it is his mission to bring this Hinds County town of about 1000 up to par.
"We're going to take some of the small things that we can do ourselves and try to get done and we're going to try to go after as much funding as we can to get the big issues taken care of," said the mayor.
Wallace said he will reach out to nearby municipalities for guidance in his mission, cities like Vicksburg and that city's mayor, George Flaggs.
"I think Marcus is a great guy," said Flaggs. "He's a businessman, he's a entrepreneur and I think he's going to do great things."
One thing he's already done that many would consider great is give up inaugural festivities and help a needy family whose children didn't even have shoes to wear.
"That kind of touched us and stayed with me the entire holidays," added Wallace. "And I told my committee, my staff, hey, instead of us having an inaugural party, we gonna, my first job, our first duty is gonna be put some shoes on these kids feet."
