JULIA'S FORECAST: Rainy today, storms on Saturday

Good morning! The New Year is favoring rainy conditions so far it seems. After plentiful showers on New Year's Day we're expecting even more rain today and Saturday. Today showers are likely anywhere on the map, but will be most plentiful over Hinds/Rankin/Madison Counties along with those north and west of the tri-county area. A quarter of an inch to an inch of rain is possible by this evening.

Some unusual circumstances take place in our weather tonight- we'll actually see our temperatures warming after the sun goes down. This is thanks to warm, moist air surging over us from the Gulf of Mexico. We'll likely be near 60 degrees at daybreak on Saturday.

That warm, muggy start is a perfect primer for stormy conditions. Isolated storms will pop up north and west in the morning. By midday we'll be concerned about storms developing into super cells over our area, some of which could contain hail, damaging wind, and even tornadoes. High temperatures will be very warm for this time of year, near 70. A cold front pushes through in the afternoon, firing off more stormy weather through central Mississippi until the evening hours. It's certainly important to stay weather aware all day long.

Rain and storms will move eastward overnight, creating clearing conditions by early Sunday morning. Sunday will be cooler and much quieter with sunshine and a high in the upper 50s.
