JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - As frigid temperatures continue to drop, you still have time to protect your pets, plants, pipes and cars.

"If they have plants that are in containers, they either need to bring them inside or cover them up with plastic if they are too heavy to bring inside," said Gwen Jacobs of Greenbrook Flowers.

Jacobs says your potted plants will also be able to withstand temperatures inside the garage.

"Water them before you put the plastic on them, added Jacobs. "It kind of makes it a greenhouse affect."

"We've been very busy," said Scott Copeland of  Revell Hardware in Pearl. "We've had a constant flow of customers coming in and out getting faucet covers, getting batteries and different things to prepare for the cold weather."

To prevent frozen pipes inside and outside your home Copeland says faucet covers are a must.

"This is a foam cover for protecting your outside faucets," added Copeland. "And you just hook this on the outside of the faucet and you just tighten it with this here and that's all there is to it. It will prevent it from freezing, hopefully. That's what they are made for and they generally do a good job of it."

And if you have ice on your car windshield in the morning, Rogers Dabbs Chevrolet experts in Brandon say it's crucial you remove the ice the proper way.

"Do not put warm water on the windshield, it could crack your window," said Brett Adams. "You want to have your fluids checked. You want to check your antifreeze. Make sure you have plenty of antifreeze in your system. Also, your windshield washer fluid. They do make fluid that will not freeze at the freezing point. But do be careful running down the roads at high speeds and running your windshield washer fluids because it could put a thin coat of ice on your windshield."

Cold temperatures can also cause your tire pressure to go low, so you will need to make sure you check the pressure in all of your tires before you get on the road in the morning.
