JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Jackson police are following up new leads on a Belhaven armed robbery after a runner -- participating in the Mississippi Blues Marathon Saturday morning -- discovered evidence along the route.

The runner found the purse -- stolen from 69-year-old Carolyn Temple by two men Wednesday night -- somewhere on Frontage Road near St. Dominic Hospital, according to Temple's daughter.

Tress Temple Gardner said she hopes the break leads to an arrest in the case.

"It's not something I would wish on my worst enemy," Gardner said, recalling the sequence of events that stemmed from the armed robbery and shooting that leaves Temple hospitalized, a bullet still lodged in her spine.

Still, Gardner said her mother's condition is improving slowly.

Right now, she is at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, conscious, but has limited movement in her extremities.

"It's just a really surreal situation don't ever think it's going to happen to you," Gardner said.

Temple was robbed and shot while bringing up trash cans from a friend's house on Euclid Avenue.

Gardner said Precinct Four Commander James McGowan told her investigators will be working to analyze any prints from the purse.

No arrests have been made in the case.
