JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - It was a day of community service and outreach for many Belhaven students as they celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior.

Alfred Donnell says, "It's a day we can be thankful for."

And a day people make an effort to come together to achieve community outreach and service. Alfred Donnell works at the Spencer Perkins Center in Jackson where a group of Belhaven students worked to clean up the property.

This is an annual outreach program for students at Belhaven.

For more than a decade, hundreds of students and teachers have dedicated their time on this day of remembrance to help serve the community.

Kedydra Brooks, a student and volunteer, says, "I think it's good that students are able to recognize and see that it's actually here in our town and it's not far away from our school. They are wanting to give back and just help out."

Brooks says from service projects like painting, cleaning to yard work and serving food, it's a way for students to serve the community around them in an area were poverty exists.

Brooks says, "You know, it's everywhere not just here in west Jackson or here in Mississippi. It's all over the world."

The Belhaven football team was a big part of the MLK service project, Operations Graduate Assistant Ashleigh Hoover says, it's a time the team can come together and be apart of the community.

"This is just a really good way to get our guys more involved in the community and to have that relationship with the community. You get a sense of gratification and I would urge everyone to get out here and help."
