HATTIESBURG (WLBT) - It's a black Tuesday in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss announced that they will withhold the men's basketball team from 2015 postseason competition. That includes the Conference USA Tournament, the NIT, CBI, CIT, and the NCAA Tournament.
USM made the decision as a NCAA inquiry is in progress. The investigation centers on the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons under former head coach Donnie Tyndall. Athletic director Bill McGillis informed the team of his decision this afternoon. He said the following in a statement.
"I am saddened and extremely disappointed for the members of our men's basketball team, who will not be able to participate in the postseason this year, as well as for our new coaching staff and fans. This self-imposed penalty was a painful, but necessary decision based on information gathered during the review process and available to the university at this time."
The Golden Eagles are 5 and 11 overall, 0 and 5 in Conference USA. They start a two-game Texas roadtrip Thursday with Rice. Tipoff is at 7:00pm.
