JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Law enforcement with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department and Jackson Police Department are patrolling the streets prepared to write tickets and take criminals into custody.

The Jackson law enforcement blitz is going on from Thursday until Sunday, with one goal - reducing crime.

"This is not necessarily numbers-driven. We believe that the visibility of law enforcement in our county and in our city makes our citizens feel safe," says Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance.

On Thursday night, our crew rode along with Corporal Harrison Matory of the JPD.

"They know we're out here, and they're not as quick to make...to jump to commit a crime," says Corporal Matory. "And no one wants to be locked up, so therefore they will either go somewhere else or they'll stay in for the night."

During our ride along he stopped two people. One ran a red light and the other was speeding.

Those might seem like light violations for a Thursday night - not so in these cases.

"Individual ran a red light at Meadowbrook and State Street. At that point, he was stopped. He was issued three citations for running a red light, no insurance and expired tag," says Corporal Matory.

And the man who was caught speeding?

Corporal Matory says the field sobriety test didn't go well for the driver. And a check of his ID revealed a suspended license.

"Being a part of the DUI unit, this helps us catch a lot of people that are under the influence, to where there may be drugs or alcohol."

But how do traffic stops address the criminal element in Jackson?

By increasing visibility, which deters crime.

Officers like Corporal Matory agree which is why they're keeping the roads hot.

"Nothing is routine. No matter what call we go on, no matter what traffic stop, you have to look at every traffic stop," he says. "You have to be aware of everything, because you never know what you're going into."
