VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A phenomenal young lady has touched the lives of many in her hometown of Vicksburg.

Afton Wallace was this year's homecoming queen and she was named Miss Warren Central High School.

She's a graduating senior, and was chosen as class favorite and voted captain of the swim team; all of this while battling cancer.

Afton is a vivacious young woman, full of life and full of vigor. She's a person who takes things one day at a time..

She is battling stage 4 Ewings Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer found in children.

This swim champ, stage conqueror, and class favorite is now in the battle for her life. Yet she does it with the smile of an angel.

"You can have breakdown moments cause everyone has breakdown moments, and sometimes you have them every day," says Afton. "But you have to keep a smile on your face to make it through. You really do."

Of all people, the spirit of our school had to go through this," says Nancy Robertson. "We don't understand this but everybody has a new look on life because of her."

In fact, Afton's hometown of Vicksburg has rallied around her and so has her family at Warren Central High School.

She's got her own parking space and even when she's too sick to make it to school, she's still present.

"And even when she couldn't physically be in class, we have a little robot," says Andrea Fairchild. "It was like an iPad and she was able to come to some classes that way."

In fact she's taking AP courses and already has a scholarship lined up to BYU.

"I'm hoping that I can go to college in the fall," says Afton. "I mean that's what we're planning, we're planning, to go to college and and keep living a normal life as long as I can. I mean, I could live a month I could live for 20 years. We never know so..."

Afton says her mission is remission. If you'd like to help Afton and her family, she has a go fund me page set up.
