VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Hundreds gathered to remember a Vicksburg teenager who served as an inspiration to an entire community during her battle with cancer.

Family and friends shared stories of Afton Wallace's life Saturday, how despite her diagnosis and excruciating pain, she still managed to always smile.

Afton died last Sunday.

Three days before that, she accepted her high school diploma in person from Warren Central High School.

Her mother said she's eternally grateful for that.

"We know that the Lord literally came down and bound her up, and gave her the strength not only to attend, but actually to walk across the floor to receive her diploma. It was a miracle right in front of your very eyes," said Afton's mother, Sheri Wallace.

Her parents said they hope to set up a scholarship to BYU in Afton's memory because she intended to go there.

Afton will be buried in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 8.
