M-Brave and Shucker honored by Southern League

MARIETTA, GA (SouthernLeague.com) – The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 25 through May 31.  Righthander Jake Brigham of the Mississippi Braves was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Biloxi Shuckers shortstop Orlando Arcia earned Player of the Week honors.

Mississippi hurler Jake Brigham appeared in just one start, but made the most of his outing. Tossing eight shutout frames in the Braves 1-0 win over Pensacola on May 29, the Winter Garden, FL native allowed just three hits and walked none, while striking out five batters. He led all Southern League starting pitchers with a 0.38 WHIP and batting average against of .115. The Central Florida Christian product's eight innings were most in the circuit among pitchers with a clean 0.00 ERA. This is his third career Player of the Week award after the Northwest League selected him in July of 2007, in addition to South Atlantic League honors on August 16, 2010.

In five games played last week, Southern League batting leader, Arcia continued his impressive 2015 campaign with a league high 10 hits, six extra-base hits, 18 total bases, and five doubles. In addition, he posted top-five numbers with a .455 batting average, six runs, five RBI, an .818 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.296. The Anaco, Venezuela native had more than one hit in four of his five contests, ripping three base hits in two of those games. His biggest night came in the Shuckers 11-8 win at Chattanooga on May 30. In a game that pitted the loop's two division leaders, Arcia went 3-for-6 with three runs, three hits, a pair of doubles and an RBI. This is his second career Player of the Week award after he garnered Florida State League honors on June 30 of last year.
