HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

They are canine investigators. Top cops in sniffing out crime.

The highly trained dogs are in Jackson competing in the National Detector dog trials. It's part of the U.S. Police canine association.

Today, the dogs and their handlers were trying to find the source of an arson fire.

Yesterday, dogs competed at finding hidden drugs.

"These guys are out here competing and a lot of times this is broken down into tenths of points between the competitors, so it's a very competitive competition that we have going on here and, like I said, it's the top dogs in the country," says Chief Deputy Chris Picou with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

The dogs will be put to the test in this national competition.

They are trained also to sniff out explosives and are used as cadaver dogs in search and recovery missions.
