MEMPHIS (WLBT) - Davis Riley is one of the most accomplished junior golfers in Mississippi history. The Hattiesburg native added another accomplishment to the ledger on Monday. Riley shot 69 and 67 in Memphis to qualify for the 2015 U.S. Open.
Sectional qualifying was contested at Germantown Country Club and Ridgeway Country Club. The field featured 121 players competing for just 10 spots. Riley carded four birdies in the opening round at Germantown, including the par-3 17th and par-4 18th.
The Presbyterian Christian standout started his 2nd round with a bogey, but bounced back with birds on 2 & 3. Riley birdied 4 holes on the back nine to finish 6-under overall. His score was better than four major champions.
Before beginning his college career with Alabama, Riley will tee it up at Chambers Bay. The U.S. Open starts June 18th. All four rounds will be televised on FOX 40.
