JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - If you drive Jefferson Street between Fortification and High streets, you've probably noticed a much smoother drive within the past several days.

Ongoing maintenance work is expected along Jefferson Street in preparation for paving, which could take place as early as next year. The progress along Jefferson is part of "Operation Orange Cone," an initiative to improve Jackson Streets.

Several nearby streets have also been smoothed out and will be up for paving this summer.

"The work that we're doing right now is interim work," said Sheila Byrd of the city of Jackson communications office. "This is work that will ensure that our roads become smoother and more passable as we move forward with the infrastructure master plan which is more comprehensive and will require more construction."

You can track the city's progress on the City of Jackson's website. Click on the "Operation Orange Cone" link.
