Would you trade your gun for gas?

Modeling a program that's been successful in Baton Rouge and other cities, on Saturday Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis will host Gas for Guns. The program offers gas cards to people willing to turn in their weapons, no questions asked.

Actor Dan Aykroyd, the Sheriff's personal friend and a sworn Hinds County Deputy, is fueling the program with his own money. Aykroyd is purchasing $10,000 worth of gas cards, and he will be on hand Saturday at the Pearl Street AME Church to help with the trade-off. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served to those who want to stop and converse with Aykroyd and law enforcement.

If you have a bigger weapon, you'll get more cash on your card.

"Anything less than a 9mm we're going to give a $50 gas card," said Sheriff Lewis. "Anything larger we're going to give a $100 gas card. Any assault weapons we're going to give away a $200 gas card."

Sheriff Lewis understands some people might be gun-shy about turning in their weapon, especially if they're a convicted felon.
But he assures us, there's no catch.

"They can stop by, pull in the parking lot, drop the gun off, nobody will ask any questions," said Lewis.

Sheriff Lewis says the serial numbers of the guns will be run, and if they've been reported stolen, attempts will be made to return the weapons to their owners. Other guns will be destroyed.

Gas for Guns will take place Saturday from 2-5 p.m. at Pearl Street AME Church, 2519 Robinson Street, Jackson. The time will be extended if needed.
