JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A federal judge has rejected efforts to end his oversight of a private prison holding Mississippi inmates.

U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, in a ruling signed Wednesday and filed Thursday, says conditions have not improved enough at the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility to release the Mississippi Department of Corrections from a 2012 consent decree.

The state and prison operator Management & Training Corp. argued conditions had improved so much in early 2015 that Reeves should end the case. Reeves, though, says not enough time has passed to prove improvements will stick. Thus, he ruled the prison is still so unsafe that it violates inmates' constitutional right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Southern Poverty Law Center are representing prisoners in the case.
