MS Specialist Helps Battle Bird Flu

An avian flu outbreak has devastated Iowa's poultry industry.  And this state is helping out.  A specialist with the Board of Animal Health Livestock and Poultry has been sent to Iowa to support response efforts there.

Jesse Carter was deployed to Iowa this week.  More than 29 million commercial and backyard birds in that state have been affected. There are no reported cases in Mississippi.

Carter will support the Iowa state veterinarian by identifying and addressing technical issues associated with bird flu.  He will initially work at the incident command located in Minnesota before deploying to Iowa for the mission that will last until July 10.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports nearly 47 million birds have been affected in Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
