Hundreds enjoy Medgar Evers Parade

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Hundreds lined the streets near Freedom Corner Saturday morning for the Medgar Evers Parade. Children grabbed for candy, and families waved to the well-wishers riding by.

Civil rights activist Medgar Evers was shot and killed in his Jackson, Mississippi driveway on June 12, 1963.

This year marks 52 years since his assassination.

"He was a civil rights leader just like Martin Luther King," says young Miyanna Lee of Jackson.

City of Jackson Deputy CAO Marshand Crisler stood in for Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber as Grand Marshal.
