Mississippi has high injury-related death rate

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi has a higher-than-average number of injury deaths that could be prevented. A new report by the foundation, Trust for America's Health, outlines preventable injury death rates in every state.

Overall, Mississippi ranks eighth highest in the nation for the number of injury-related deaths. However, unlike the national trend, we rate among the lowest for deaths caused by drug overdose. We are ranked near the bottom of the list, at number nine.

Our highest deaths are from motor vehicle accidents, with an average of 23 deaths per 100-thousand people.

The most vulnerable population for any injury death in Mississippi is children, ages zero to 19 years of age.
