JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A man pretending to be a police officer, and committing crimes in the process is behind bars in Rankin County. The sheriff's department says they have now recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen items in his possession.

Thirty-four year old Gary Beau Mapp had everything from motorcycles, to the kitchen sink said investigators. Authorities captured Mapp after a home invasion.

"The suspect went there to commit a house burglary, there happened to be an individual at the house," said Sheriff Bryan Bailey. "He detained with handcuffs, put a zip tie around his neck. Luckily the victim was able to get away."

Investigators say Mapp also had police gear, including a blue light, body armour and badges. He's also charged with impersonating a police officer.

"He told the victim up there that he was a deputy," said Sheriff Bailey. "He's dressed with body armor, and had a gun on his side, cause you saw the badges. It's things like that that really gets under my skin because that causes a distrust between the public and law enforcement."

The stolen items were recovered inside Mapp's reservoir condo he was renting. The owners of the property gave us a tour. He left the home completely trashed.

"We were completely taken by surprise. We didn't understand that we trusted the man," said the owner.  He was two months behind on rent. We just tried to collect it."

Investigators say Mapp is now cooperating with them, and leading them to other places around the metro where he stashed stolen items.
