JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Another black bear sighting; this time it's in Jefferson county.

"Consider yourself lucky if you see one, said Jim Walker of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. "You know the bears that have been spotted lately are creating quite a stir."

One of our viewers snapped a picture as the bear was wandering.

"More than likely it's a young male looking for two things, food and love," added Walker.

Within six days this is the second black bear to be spotted out of the wild. The last was seen in Hinds County. Walker said you are seeing black bears because this is the time of year black bears are being kicked out of the dens by their mothers. And their population is growing.

"Well, it used to be basically zero," said Walker. "But, due to the efforts of the department of wildlife we project there to be about 150 to 175 bears in the state of Mississippi."

Although sightings tend to be few and far between, Walker said if you see one don't panic.

"If you want him to leave, bring in your garbage and bring in your cat food," said Walker. "Don't try to get an autograph. Don't try and do a photo-op. Leave the bear alone and he will more than likely be on his way."

If you do see a black bear and would like to report it, you can call the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. They will send out a conservation officer to check it out.
