JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some Jackson residents are fighting plans to rezone their neighborhood, fearing the businesses it would attract would be detrimental.

Homeowners living near Northside Drive turned to Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes to prevent the rezoning of the area from C-2 to C-3.

They gathered in front of stores and shops in the 100 block of West Northside Drive.

Existing businesses in the area include wireless communications, clothing and nail shops and a liquor store.

Stokes said a zoning change proposal is currently before the City Planning Committee.

Residents oppose the move that they say will create havoc in their community.

"If the neighborhood is destabilized by pay day lenders and other things that can move in under C-3. It's an unrestricted zoning if it's C-3, and we want things to be family oriented. We want the neighborhood to be stable," said more than 25 year resident Shirley Miller.

The Jackson councilman said the Planning Board will discuss the issue Wednesday.
