JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Jackson Police say a man who had barricaded himself inside a home at 440 Conner Avenue is in custody.

The incident started when a man drove to a nearby Exxon Station, just before 5 p.m., and told police his roommate had shot at him after an argument with a shotgun.

When police went to Conner Avenue to check out his story, they found the roommate had barricaded himself in the house.

A neighbor told us he saw the two men arguing and says one man ran into the house, came out with a shotgun and started firing.

"This is a situation where two individuals lived in the same house, got into an argument and apparently could not resolve it other than one individual shooting at another, and unfortunately in the city of Jackson, this is the script too much on other shootings that we've had in the past," said Chief Lee Vance with the Jackson Police Department.

SWAT team spent hours trying to arrest the roommate. They used flash bombs to gain entry inside and the suspect surrendered without injury.

"Absolutely could have been a lot worse but you know we've got very good negotiators, the officers who responded initially knew when to back up, knew when to deescalate, that is important," Chief Vance explained.

Reporter, Annette Peagler spoke to neighbors about the incident.

"They were putting heavy armor on," resident Linda Smith explained. Reporter: Seeing all that what did you think? Smith: I was scared, I thought bullets were going to go everywhere so I didn't know what was going on so I just stayed in the house," she said.

Police have not released any names. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. He denied treatment from AMR. Police charged his roommate with aggravated assault.
