JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The lives of a father and son were taken instantly when the Jeep they were traveling in went over a guard rail on I-55 falling several stories.
Are guard rails keeping drivers safe on over passes and bridges?

"They need to be a little higher or maybe a little stronger," said Delores Harris.

"I think they are at a medium height, but they should be higher," added Bill Dunson.

Just hours before Father's Day, 63 year old Robert Sims and his 27 year old son Randall were killed when a driver stuck the back of their Jeep, sending them over the guard rail on I-55 South. The car fell several stories, landing on Woodrow Wilson killing the two men.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation tells us that in this case, the guard rails did hold up and were not a factor in this accident. Drivers and passengers in the metro area say guard rails are not to blame.

"If you are riding on bad roads it's really irrelevant how high the guard rails are," added Dunson.

"A lot of us are not paying attention. A lot of us are on the phone," added Harris. "I have driven on the interstate many times and they are texting and all that and I think that needs to stop."

In this case, Police believe the driver of the second car involved, 47 year old Yolanda McNeely was driving drunk. Police tell us she clipped the victim's Jeep and kept driving. She is behind bars charged with two counts of aggravated DUI and one count of Felony Fleeing the Scene of an Accident.
