Thursday night, more winners will be announced at the Miss Mississippi Pageant in Vicksburg. The first preliminary winners were announced Wednesday at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Talent and Swimsuit. The first night of preliminary competition is in the books.
The two winners actually grew up together. Hannah Roberts and Ivey Swan are from Hattiesburg. Roberts is Miss University of Southern Mississippi, and the winner in Wednesday night's Talent Preliminary. Swan is Miss Hattiesburg and a winner in swimwear. They are also sorority sisters.
"It is absolutely incredible," said Swan. "I have wanted to win a swimsuit pre-lim for two years now and it is just so surreal."
"I've played for 18 years and I actually began as a ballet dancer," Roberts told us.
Roberts was the first runner up in 2013. But did not compete last year.
"I did take last year off. I was in Honduras actually during the time of the pageant so I was extremely excited and humbled to win the talent preliminary again this year," said Roberts. "It's one of my favorite portions of the competition."
Swan competes in evening wear Friday. She says it has given her an opportunity to honor two Hattiesburg police officers, Benjamin Dean and Liquori Tate, killed in the line of duty in May.
"I'm doing evening gown on Friday night and I just really want Mississippians to know how important it is to me to honor our fallen officers."
Thursday night there's another round of preliminary competition. More winners will be announced in Talent and swimwear, but contestants will also compete in evening wear and on stage question.
