Medicaid expansion push expected soon in Mississippi

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Supreme Court decision upholding subsidies benefits about 100,000 Mississippians who currently qualify for it, but it has not changed anybody's mind.

Those against Obama Care are still against it and those who support it, especially those enrolled in it, applaud the ruling.

In a statement, Governor Phil Bryant said the "decision does not change the fact that Obamacare is a socialist takeover of health care forced down the throats of the American people without proper review."

Proponents of the healthcare system see it as further indication the law is rock solid.

"Right now, we see this law as the law of the land and our politicians and law makers need to start learning how to best utilize the care and reach the rest of the Mississippians that don't have care right now and make sure we have as many people covered as possible," said Jarvis Dortch with the Mississippi Heath Advocacy Program.

Dortch says the ruling clears the way to begin the fight to expand Medicaid in Mississippi.

"We want them to be able to plan for their lives, be able to start learning how to best utilize their care and to reach the rest of the Mississippians that don't have care right now and make sure that we have as many people covered as possible," added Dortch.

There are at least four more issues being sorted out in courts over Obama Care. Many of those are religious objections, like coverage for contraceptive use.

So, while the high court's decision might solve one question, it does not offer a remedy to the debate.
