Winning the title of Miss Mississippi 2015 means putting off medical school for a year, but Hannah Roberts says having the job of representing this state is a dream come true.

Months of work and preparation to be on stage at the Miss Mississippi Pageant all came down to the moment when Katie Stam Irk said, " and your new Miss Mississippi is..."

Hannah Roberts first competed at Miss Mississippi in 2013, when she was 1st runner up. This year she was the only contestant to win both a talent and swimwear preliminary.

Roberts said, "I really don't know that it has completely sunk in yet. This has been a dream of mine probably since I was 7 or 8 years old sitting at home watching the pageant, and coming with my Mom for all these years. And I never thought that growing up that this would be me."

22-year-old Roberts grew up in Hattiesburg. Her parents are educators, and she says it was the scholarship program that first appealed to her.

Roberts told us, "I knew since middle school or high school, that my parents weren't able to write a check for college or graduate school as much as they would want to. And so it's always been a goal of mine to pay for my own education without loans."

For the first time that anyone can remember, a tie created 11 finalists, instead of the customary Top 10. Roberts was the last contestant to be called down, but she finished on top.4th runner up was Meredith Thomas, Miss Delta Blues. In 3rd place was Miss Hattiesburg, Ivey Swan. Laura Lee Lewis, Miss Riverland was 2nd alternate and France Beard, Miss University was 1st runner up.

Hannah Roberts will compete in the Miss America Pageant in September.
