Family of man struck and killed in Kosciusko says investigation doesn't add up

KOSCIUSKO, MS (Mississippi News Now) - An Attala County mother wants justice for a situation that left her son dead over the weekend.

Earl Barksdale Jr., 23,  died after being hit by a vehicle on Black Jack Road in Kosciusko Saturday morning.

Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail said they obtained blood from the driver, Nicholas Steen, and are waiting on toxicology reports.

Family members said Barksdale was struck by the vehicle more than once, but law enforcement have not confirmed that.

Barksdale's family also doesn't like that Steen was released without being charged.

"That's my baby child, and I want justice to be done because that's my heart," said Emma L. Barksdale, the victim's mother. "Everybody don't understand, but that's my loss. And now I got to bury him this Friday at 2 o'clock, and I want some help with it."

"I'm mad, I'm angry, I'm all of the above, so there's no telling what would come out of my mouth if I was talking to that guy, so I really can't tell you what I would say to him," said Barksdale's fiancee, Antoinette Quarles. "It's hard because we have little children, and then we also have one on the way, which he's never gonna meet."

Barksdale's funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Attala County Coliseum.
