VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The new Miss Mississippi is already preparing for the Miss America Pageant. Hannah Roberts was chosen from 30 contestants Saturday night to become the 59th young woman to represent Mississippi in the national contest.

In the end the top two contestants were, France Beard, Miss University and Hannah Roberts, Miss University of Southern Mississippi.

There was a tie for the Top 10 Saturday night and for the first time, 11 contestants competed to become the next Miss Mississippi.

"This has been a dream of mine probably since I was 7 or 8 years old," said Roberts.

Roberts says one of the most exciting things about winning the state title is being able to give more visibility to her platform Pages of Love. She has donated over 25 thousand books to hospitals, school and homeless shelters. Roberts also wants to use her career to help children.

"In probably 11 years from now, I hope to become a pediatric plastic reconstructive surgeon," Roberts told us. "We actually don't have one in Mississippi right now. So I would love to do residency and come back and work in Mississippi and serve the children in this area who have cancer, have been in car accidents or born with birth defects.”

Miss Mississippi is now busy planning for the annual trunk show in Vicksburg, and will leave in about two months headed for Atlantic City and the Miss America Pageant.

Hannah Roberts will receive 10 thousand dollars in scholarship money, the use of an automobile, wardrobe and other gifts.

This year, the Miss Mississippi Corporation offered more than 1.3 million dollars in scholarships.
