JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Same sex couples made history in Mississippi taking the first step to legally saying "I Do", receiving their marriage licenses. It was a long awaited dream come true for the men and women who want to spend their lives together.

Larry Gladden and Jimmy McClellan of Jackson were the eighth gay couple to fill out their application for marriage Monday at the Hinds County Circuit Clerk's Office.

The two have been together for three years and had a commitment ceremony two and a half years ago.

"This piece of paper just really solidifies what the commitment I've already made to him and to our family and to each other," said Gladden, who left work to meet his partner and head to the courthouse. "It means that no matter what might happen, I can stand for him and he can stand for me."

Circuit clerk Barbara Dunn said five couples were married in the hallway, one of them a couple who was turned away Friday.

"I've been waiting for this a long time," said Shonika Fenderson who was joined by family and friends as she and partner Laytoya Haggie filled out their paperwork.

Fenderson and Haggie were the ninth same sex couple of the day to get marriage licenses.

"A lot of people are against gays anyway, but thank God he works in mysterious ways. everything worked out in our favor," said Fenderson.

But not everyone is celebrating their future nuptials.

Monday evening Country Woods Baptist Church in Byram held a prayer vigil for the nation and same sex couples.

"We believe it's in direct opposition to God's word," said Country Woods Baptist pastor Dr. Jon Daniels. "We really believe that it's time for Christians to come together to pray for our nation. We're really concerned about the direction our nation's going in after the recent supreme court decision."

Ten couples were issued marriage licenses this first day at the Hinds county courthouse.

Fenderson and Haggie plan their nuptials for Fenderson's birthday on Christmas.
