July 1, 1982: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus must admit a male student.

Joe Hogan of Columbus had tried to enroll in MUW's nursing school, but he was denied admission because of the school's long tradition of admitting only female students. Hogan sued, claiming the school was violating his Constitutional rights. Eventually, the Supreme Court agreed. Mississippi's Institutions of Higher Learning then directed the school to amend its admission policies to be inclusive of male applicants.

"Women" has remained in the school's name, but there have been several efforts over the years to change it to more accurately reflect the school's co-ed student body.
