DUI Suspect Indicted in Deaths of 2 Students

Officials say a north Mississippi man has been indicted on five counts of aggravated DUI in a crash that killed two high school students from Memphis, Tennessee, and injured three others in their vehicle.

Melandus Penson of Belden remains jailed under $3 million bond in Marshall County, Mississippi. He was arrested after the May 31 crash that killed Briarcrest Christian School students Maddie Kruse and Rachel Lynch. Both girls were 17.

The crash happened on U.S. Highway 78 in Marshall County.

District Attorney Ben Creekmore says Friday that a grand jury indicted 32-year-old Penson, who had previous DUI convictions in three other Mississippi counties.

Penson's attorney could not immediately be reached Friday.

The maximum penalty for conviction on each count of aggravated DUI is 25 years in prison.
