July 3, 1989: Jackson gets a couple of new faces in city government as Kenneth Stokes becomes a councilman for the first time and Kane Ditto becomes mayor.

Ditto replaced longtime mayor Dale Danks and would remain mayor for two terms. Harvey Johnson defeated Ditto in the Democratic primary in 1997.

Stokes was reelected repeatedly and remained on the council except for a brief tenure on the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. He returned to the council when voters chose him to replace his wife, LaRita (who had replaced him), after she was elected judge in Hinds County Court.
