Museum announces back to school events

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The African American Military History Museum at the Historic USO in Downtown Hattiesburg will be hosting two end-of-summer and back to school events; a Summer Night at the Museum on July 17, and a Back to School Boot Camp from July 22-24.

The Summer Night at the Museum is designed for children ages 7-12 and will take place from 6-8 pm. The theme is Servicemen & the Community and will have lots of edutainment for all that attend!  There will be a variety of games, as well as arts and crafts, refreshments and an after-hours tour of the Museum. Staff will be on hand to lead all activities and to conduct the tour around the USO.

The cost of the Summer Night at the Museum is $5, and the event is limited to the first 30 participants.

The second of the Museum’s offerings, the Back to School Boot Camp, is designed for preteens and teenagers ages 13-17. From July 22-24, the Boot Camp will take place from 2-4 pm each day. Over the course of three days, participants will learn techniques, skills and tips similar to those used by the military that they can apply to their own lives, including information on teamwork, healthy eating, exercise, and being a leader.

They will also be able to hear personal stories from local community leaders and be mentored by these men and women through Q&A sessions. Light refreshments will be provided each day.

There is no cost for the Back to School Boot Camp, and the event is limited to the first 15 participants.

There is no better way to prepare for school than with some end-of-summer fun at the African American Military History Museum, all the while learning what it means to be a strong leader and gaining knowledge from the past.

To register for either event, please call 601.450.1942.

The African American Military History Museum is a Hattiesburg Convention Commission Facility. Since 1991, the Hattiesburg Convention Commission has been developing, operating and promoting tourism-related facilities for the Hattiesburg area. For more information, visit the Hattiesburg USO website
