CLARKE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A death investigation is underway in Clarke County involving a Stonewall Police officer, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has stepped in.

Stonewall Police Chief Michael Street said a man, identified as 39-year-old Jonathan Sanders of Stonewall, died sometime between 10:30 p.m.and 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

Chief Street added that no gunshots were fired by the officer or the man who died.

"A Stone Police Officer encountered an individual, at which time an incident occurred," Street told WTOK. "All particulars of the incident are under investigation."

Sanders' attorney, Stuart Parish, told WTOK that Sanders was exercising his horse Wednesday night when police officer Kevin Herrington pulled him off his horse and choked him with a flashlight.

Clarke County Coroner Greg Fairchild says Sanders body has been sent to the State Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy.
