An elderly shop owner went about her business as usual, but Penny's Thursday morning at the small hair salon on Highway 80 turned into a terrifying ordeal. Armed robbers caught her off guard, then struck her in the head with a gun.

It was early Thursday when penny opened up her longtime business in Van Winkle mart. Few other shop owners had arrived. It wasn't an ordinary day.

After 43 years with no trouble whatsoever, she became another statistic.

At 8:30 a.m.,a man knocked on the door asking about hair care. Penny cracked it open and offered help.

Suddenly, a second man appeared, putting a gun to her head and forcing the elderly owner back inside. Penny said she was robbed and the two young men ransacked any area they thought would contain cash.

As I did a little investigating, going from store to store, shop owners told me they constantly look out for each other. Many of them have been here for decades.

Sharon Bevens has a shop doors away and cried as she described her friend's experience.

"She was pretty scared. Yes. She was pretty shook up when I got there this morning, said Sharon Bevens. "They put that gun right in her face. I can just imagine it would have terrified me to. It's just a shame it has to be like this around here."

Bevens, like other store owners in this small shopping mall. are on guard and concerned.

"When we moved into this area around here we learned that a lot of these tenants had been here a long time," said Bevens. "It always seemed like it was a pretty safe area with a good Landlord and things like that. But now that that happened this morning it just makes you kind of second guess if you need to be concerned or not."

The armed gunmen did not harm Penny.  She says she will stay put and with her voice cracking she said she prays the crime will not drive off her long established, elderly customers.

The getaway vehicle was a newer model black, 4-door Chevy pickup truck.  If you have any information call crimestoppers.
