RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Several Hinds County parents said they're upset over the way the Hinds County School District has handled their children's futures.

"I called to get my transfer done two weeks ago, and I was told they were no longer approving them. That's how I found out," said Byram resident Kavetta Smith.

Becky Rau's in the same boat. She and other parents showed up to Thursday night's Hinds County School Board meeting, hoping to plead her case with others, and get a decision that night.

"There is no other school that can meet my daughter's education needs in the Hinds County school district at this point," said Rau.

The board's attorney said state law only allows such transfers in certain cases, but parents say the board hasn't followed those restrictions in years past.

Rau says her daughter Jada has been approved for district-to-district transfers for the last six years.

"This is the first time that we've ever had a denial. There's no explanation for it, just a checkmark saying denied," Rau said.

Becky goes through the process so her daughter can also attend Power APAC, an option Jada loses if she has to attend a Hinds County school.

Some parents believe the denials happened because of the tax dollars the district loses when a student goes somewhere else: Superintendent Delesicia Martin put that figure at $6,000 per student.

"She did say that she's losing, but actually, she's not receiving it anyway," Smith said. "The money goes with the child, so it's not like it's being taken. She's not receiving it anyway."

We reached out to the school board for a statement regarding these actions at Thursday night's meeting, but have not yet received one.
