JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Staying cool this summer doesn't have to be expensive if you follow tips from the experts. Entergy officials say a routine checkup of your AC unit to make sure it's working efficiently is the first step in cutting cooling costs during the summer.

"The biggest way to same money on your electric bill in the summertime is to set your thermostat to 78 degrees," said Entergy Spokesperson Mara Hartmann.  "That's considered the optimal temp for comfort and energy efficiency."

Seventy-eight  degrees may be a little warm for some people, but every degree below that could add another three percent to your monthly energy bill.

Running fans is another good way to cool off cheaply. They don't use a lot of electricity, and keep the air moving.  Just be sure to turn them off when you leave the room.

"If you're going to be away from home or even if you're at home, close the window on the sides of the house where sun comes in, close blinds, don't let the sun heat your house when you're trying to cool it," added Hartmann.

Want to avoid high bills in the summer?  Entergy's budget billing helps even out your payments, averaging your bill to keep it the same from month to month.
And if your house is leaking cool air, stop it.
