CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With the advent of summer, folks  are more active; on vacation, and sometimes they let their guard down. By following a few simple safety tips,  you can do everything possible to avoid being victimized by predators who might be waiting for an advantage.

Clinton is a quiet, safe bedroom community outside of Jackson with about 28-thousand citizens. Small summertime crimes are up.according to police chief Mike Warren.

"Property crime," said Warren. "It's going to be petty thefts, burglaries; home ,auto and business."
Law breakers are always on the lookout for an easy target, so make sure you don’t give them one. It can be easy to forget to close a door or window, take items out of your vehicles. Left behind, this creates an easy opportunity for a criminal.

While lawmen are quick to respond, petty crimes tax their resources.

"It's a little bit frustrating when you have to spend time and assets on something that hopefully wouldn't have happened,." said the Chief.

But he also said when you suspect something is not quite right, call 911.  It's better safe than sorry.

Be sure to keep purses and wallets out of sight in a vehicle. Lock the doors and take valuable electronic items with you.

At home, close all windows and lock your doors when leaving.

Always keep your vehicle keys in check. If someone picks them up, they have immediate access to your vehicles with the remote.  And most people have house keys attached, and garage door openers in their vehicles.

Garage doors, in particular, are regularly used by criminals to gain access to a home during the warmer months.
