JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Respect Our Black Dollars is protesting a newly opened convenience store run by owners who were recently shut down by the City of Jackson.

The organization picketed Sunday at the Fuel Max Gas station on Atkins Boulevard. The group said the store is being run by Desmond Brown who operated Express Fuel on Northside Drive.

The Express Fuel was declared a public nuisance and shut down in May.

Jackson Night club owner Charles Thomas, whose business was also declared a nuisance, joined the protest.

"In the judge's order, I couldn't open up another night club in Hinds County, and we want  to know how can these people come up and open up another store? This is the same type of thing they did to us, the businesses the three businesses that they closed down," said Thomas.

"The same people that were operating that store is back over here operating this store. So we want the community to know it won't be long before they bring their same shenanigans over here that they had on Bailey Avenue," said Respect Our Black Dollars President, Stanley Wesley.

The Fuel Max owner was at the store, but did not comment.
