MARIETTA, GA (SouthernLeague.com) – The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for July 6 through July 12. Righthander Austin Pruitt of the Montgomery Biscuits was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Mississippi Braves middle infielder Emerson Landoni earned Player of the Week honors.
Pruitt was chosen for the weekly award after firing just the second nine-inning, complete game shutout in the Southern League this season. In the Biscuits 1-0 win over Biloxi on July 8, the righty from The Woodlands, Texas was masterful on the hill, striking out five Shuckers, while allowing just three hits and no walks. In earning his fifth win of the season, Pruitt lowered his ERA on the season to 2.99 over a league-high 99.1 innings. This is the Houston Cougar’s second career Pitcher of the Week award after the Florida State League honored him on August 4 of last season.
Leading the league with a .556 batting average, 10 runs, 15 hits, six extra-base hits, 22 total bases, and five doubles, M-Braves shortstop and second baseman Emerson Landoni cruised to the Southern League Player of the Week award. Adding a league-high .586 on-base percentage, .815 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.401, the Maracay, Venezuela native paced his club to five wins in six of his games played last week and a share of the South Division second-half lead. Landoni hit safely in all six contests and recorded four multi-hit outings. His most impressive performance came in the Braves wild 11-10 comeback win at Chattanooga on July 12. Trailing 10-5 with two outs in the ninth, Landoni opened the scoring with a two-run double, his third two-bagger of the night, that began a six-run rally. The double was his perfect fifth base hit in five at-bats, adding to his four runs, triple and three RBI. This is his first career Player of the Week award.
